Saw ‘Green Book’ (2018) last night. A very politically liberal, and soft and fluffy film. Viggo Mortensen plays the chain smoking, fast food guzzling, Italian, racist, former nightclub bouncer chauffeur for Dr Don Shirley. Eventually, Viggo learns the error of his ways™ and becomes, so the movie implies, non-racist.
My favourite thing about the movie was all the rabbit punching of racists that Viggo ends up doing, in addition to the wonderful love letters that he sends to his wife.
It’s worth a watch if you’re like me, and have issues with watching deliberately confrontational and anxiety-inducing Hollywood movies.
For me at least, I have enough anxiety stressors in my meatspace life that I don’t feel the need to watch nauseating gore and moral turpitude. The movie was also written by someone close to the duo, for once.
This also brings to mind the frustrations I have with much of Hollywood: like Mr. Robot. Clearly the writers and showrunners of that TV series know nothing, or at least very little, about cyberspace and the anti-capitalist online hacktivist organising that spills over into meatspace.
