I have been having lots of discussions over the years about the future of UNIX and C, and monolithic kernels, and I think we need to be moving on.
I absolutely love 9front, but it is written in C, which has, as we all know, weak typing. I have been rather fascinated with C lately, as I have been studying the internals of EMACS and other EMACS clones, like Zile.
It’s a complex issue, but I think we do need to be putting the bad things about UNIX to rest, and starting to leave the 70s. UNIX, overall, was an experiment and somewhat of a kludge. It was meant to be a response to MULTICS, which, I don’t think needed a response. We should have gone a lot further down the MULTICS road, instead of still hanging onto old UNIX metaphors and concepts like we have.
That said, the best thing about UNIX and free software is its community, culture, and politics. Whether or not we decide to move on, we need to keep our comradeships and affinities strong and full of trust and love ❤
