Technology is only one part of preventing wrongdoing and promoting personal flourishing. The silicon valley culture of designing and selling a new computer programme to, say, find love, live healthier, or improve your mental health is pretty blind and idiotic. It’s a little like buying an indulgence from the Catholic church back in the Middle Ages. It does makes me wonder: how cynical are the silicon valley giants?
My best guess at the moment is that anyone rushing to make a computer programme for lay, social use is probably not thinking in the slightest about the social effects of their cybernetic commercial products, and are just looking to make a quick buck.
I love computers, and I hack, or at least day dream about hacking, everyday—but in this space: less is more.
