i am still a big fan of evangelion, but i recently read an article that cleared up a lot of its philosophy for me.
it rejects or passes over community-identity between humans. instead, it asserts that humans can only have individual identities, and the trauma that the characters suffer can only be endured, and cannot be undone.
the thing that i can commend the series for is being consistent with developing and unraveling the concepts of its philosophy. it doesn’t stray from the analysis it gives of its characters. and it does give enough depth to its characters too – that is the best thing about the series.
the plan of NERV to cancel out all the AT fields between humans and dissolve humanity into a single entity is also a mechanical solution to the problem of intersubjective recognition.
BUT! it’s a sick series and an absolute landmark in anime (:
